We are excited to introduce Gemma Cunningham, our dedicated Podiatry Assistant at Borders Podiatry and Performance Clinic. Gemma joined our team in January 2023, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to patient care, making her an invaluable member of our clinic.
Gemma’s journey in healthcare began in 2000 when she studied Social Care at Borders College, where she excelled academically, achieving straight A’s in her Highers. After completing her studies, she spent five years working in social care, supporting adults with learning disabilities. This early experience fostered her passion for helping others and set the foundation for her career in healthcare.
Born and raised in the Borders, Gemma has deep-rooted connections to the area and the community. Her local background gives her a unique understanding of the needs of the people she serves, and she is dedicated to contributing to the well-being of her community.
In 2005, Gemma began working for NHS Borders as a Podiatry Assistant. During her time with the NHS, she underwent six months of on-the-job training, completing the comprehensive training set out by the Royal College of Podiatry and Chiropody. Her role involved assisting with wound care and nail surgery, as well as delivering basic foot care training to nursing home and hospital staff. This experience equipped Gemma with the skills and knowledge needed to provide high-quality care to patients and support the podiatry team effectively.
Gemma’s dedication to her role and her continuous pursuit of professional development led to her securing the position of Associate Podiatrist within the NHS in April of this year. She is currently undertaking a modern apprenticeship, which involves studying through Borders College and further on-the-job training. This apprenticeship is an exciting opportunity for Gemma to expand her skills and knowledge, and we are thrilled to support her on this journey.
At Borders Podiatry and Performance Clinic, Gemma plays a crucial role in ensuring our patients receive the best possible care. Her background in social care, combined with her extensive experience in podiatry and deep connection to the Borders, allows her to connect with patients on a personal level and provide compassionate, patient-centred care.
We are proud to have Gemma Cunningham on our team and look forward to seeing her continue to grow and excel in her role as she advances her career in podiatry.
